CHAPTER EIGHT

“I never knew Albert to be such a jerk,” Kelly said a little while later. “He really said all of those things to you?”

Loretta nodded. “It was terrible. I mean, I’ve always hated outdated views about women, but this guy was a little extreme. The way he tried to intimidate me by stepping on my property and refusing to get off was too much.”

“It sort of makes you wonder what else he might be capable of.” Kelly hesitated for a moment. “I also wonder what he meant about Chief Hargraves. What could he possibly have against Harold?”

“That part is a mystery to me as well,” Loretta said. “I have more questions than I’m afraid I’ll ever get answers to.”

“Like who might be messing with the golf carts?” Kelly asked.

“That’s one,” Loretta agreed. “Also, how many golf carts do we have here in total? Was it all of them that were malfunctioning? Were those carts taken out of the rotation for use after the fact?

“They should have been,” Kelly said. “While there isn’t a specific caretaker or mechanic for the golf carts, there is some coordination on the village management level.”

“Do the golf carts receive any regular maintenance? Is there a schedule for that?” Loretta found her curiosity deepening.

Kelly shook her head. “Basically, the golf carts are maintained on an as-needed basis. I’m not too familiar with that any longer, though. My work now basically centers on the council and property management.”

“Is there any way to see the sign-out sheets? Harold mentioned that Edwin was the last person to sign out the cart that was pulled from the lake,” Loretta said.

Kelly nodded. “All we have to do is go and sign one out ourselves.”

“Do you think it’s weird that the golf carts haven’t all been put out of order?” Loretta asked.

“A little, but it may still happen.”

“So, if we want to get a look at that list, we’d better take a walk.”

“Do you prefer to walk, or do you want to drive?”

“Honestly, I think a walk would be nice,” Loretta said. “It will be good to get some sunshine on our faces.”

“I agree with you,” Kelly said. “Maybe we’ll find out more information about Edwin, if there is any.”

Loretta’s breath hitched. “With all of this Albert nonsense, I forgot to tell you that just before Harold left, he got a call telling him that Edwin’s body had been recovered.”

“Oh, dear,” Kelly said. “Poor Rosalie.”

“I agree, but on the other hand, it has to be a relief to know,” Loretta said. “I think the worst part would be not knowing what really happened to him. I mean, he was missing, which is terrible, but I’d sleep better with the truth than without it.”

Kelly nodded and headed to Loretta’s kitchen. “Want a water bottle for the journey?”

“Sure. You know where to find them.” Loretta waited at the front door while Kelly retrieved the water from the bottom drawer of the fridge.

“I keep mine in the same place,” Kelly said. “I guess it’s a bad habit for us young, independent women.
